In December 1966, a group of 16 concerned parents and professionals from St. Louis and Springfield, Missouri met to discuss organizing an association for children with learning disabilities. In 1967, this group became the Missouri Learning Disabilities Association, acting under the bylaws and charters of the National Learning Disabilities Association.
Volunteers operated out of their homes and received modest grants, which eventually allowed them to open a small office in St. Louis in 1993. Over time, the organization grew, and in 2003, the St. Louis Learning Disabilities Association became an independent 501©3 organization and moved to its current location at 13537 Barrett Parkway in Ballwin.
Nearly 145,000 people have had contact with the St. Louis LDA since its modest beginnings. In 2009, the organization served 29,573 children, parents and teachers from the St. Louis community.
St. Louis LDA is funded solely by individuals, corporations and private foundations. It has never received any state or federal funding and is not a member of the United Way.
St. Louis LDA is the only organization in the greater St. Louis community providing a comprehensive range of services to children with learning disabilities and/or ADHD, their parents and teachers.
